My Book Review of the PAULTAIN BOOK and Some Personal Reflections It Triggered

This thread seeks to provide my take on the book “The Paultain Experience” a mongering focused auto-biography published in 2009 by the since deceased fellow ladyboy monger Paultain who I am considering for induction this year (2022) into my self-instituted Romscars Hall of Legends.

I encourage all BMs to post their own reflections on the book if they read it and on Paultain himself.

Regardless of what I think, Paultain is already legendary enough in the minds of many fellow BMs who met him in person on the field of battle (Pattaya) or followed his authoritative posts at several ladyboy boards, including here.  However, Paultain was by his own accounts mostly a GG monger and I was never totally convinced of his ladyboy mongering credentials and that’s why I did not put him up for induction sooner.  In this thread I will explain why I hesitated, while wanting to reassure upfront that Paultain will likely be inducted this year unless some other BM comes up with hesitations more critical than my own, which I doubt will happen.

You see, Paultain did something no other ladyboy monger has done: he wrote a book where he demystifies sex with ladyboys!  For that alone he is legendary in his own right.

But, by my own literary-critical standards, I am not crazy about his book and when I got it years ago I put it down after reading the first 3 or 4 chapters and skipping to the last few pages which confirmed the rest of the book would be more of the same.

I just returned from a trip to TH-PH during which I forced myself to read the book from cover to cover (388 pages) so as to learn as much as I could about Paultain as a matter of due diligence with a view to inducting him or not into the Romscars Hall of Legends.  That due diligence objective was accomplished and in the process I realized why I was not so keen on the book the first time around when I had instinctively dismissed it as too tritely and predictably written for me, too self-hagiographic and likely selectively dubious throughout.

But as I read more of it during the trip, I began to realize that the real reason I was uncomfortable about “The Paultain Experience” is that it was showing flashes of myself in the mirror and I did not like what I saw.

I hate it when that happens. Do tell us what you did not like.

Is this book available on kindle?

It's not on kindle. As you are in Pattaya, it's probably available at Canterbury Tales Bookshop.

Right. Cheers. They moved, but not sure where. I’ll give them a call.

Soi Bongkot near Soi Bongkot 6/3. This is across 3rd Road, about 800 yards from the old location.

Yes in the next post I will acknowledge how I see myself in the mirror (and not just myself btw) in Paultain’s alfa monger antics going through and discarding multiple young sex partners while professing how much more considerate he was of them and how much more he was genuinely liked by them than the masses of non-enlightened mongers who understood nothing about Thais and Thai culture and could not even begin to grasp his sublime experience ("The Paultain Experience").  But for now I will do just a quick FACTUAL summary of the book and of what it reveals about Paultain the man:

By my backwards calculation from where he says he was 52 at the time of the book’s publication in 2009, Paultain was born in 1957 in what he referred to as “Bandit Country” in Belfast, Northern Ireland and lived there during “the troubles” i.e. the IRA armed uprising that flared in the 1970s.  His birth name was “Paul” and if he did not reveal his surname in the book, neither will I here.  He died in 2015 of "natural causes" as announced here and at PY and I will not elaborate on that either on the basis of hearsay.

In the book he starts his mongering story as a young man “just turned 20” working in the Middle East “in the 1980s.”  And right off the bat I spotted the first incongruency:  if he was born in 1957 he would have been 23+ in the 1980s NOT “just turned 20” as he wrote.   He never actually wrote what his work was in the Middle East just that he was fucking foreign maids galore in Saudi Arabia and taking sex vacations to the Philippines where he got hooked on Asian pussy for life.

Then one day (he does not say which year) he was on his way to Manila, made a stopover in BKK and impulse-leased a bar in the Nana Entertainment Plaza (which I checked on Wikipedia transitioned from a shopping center to go-go bars also in the 1980s).  I think the book says Paultain's bar was called ‘707’ and according to Paultain it was an instant success, as everything else he did businesswise in his life according to the book.

“One year later” (still no idea what year it was) he "got bored" and decided “to see the rest of this glorious country” and left the bar in the hands of a diligent ladyboy he had hired but apparently had not fucked.  He went to Phuket for 6 months then to Pattaya for another 6, after which he gave up on the Nana Bar and got another one in Pattaya (on soi 2) that was an even greater success.  It was called '747' but he did not go into it right away as he was ”on the piss in Pattaya for over a year” during when “he shagged half the town” mostly GGs with the occasional ladyboy thrown in.

At some point he married a Thai woman who came to his soi 2 bar and then they opened a restaurant called Mickey O’Mouse in soi 13/2-Post Office where the Pump Station is now.  He and the wife and some lady employees lived above the restaurant which, according to him, was haunted by the ghost of a young Thai boy and in the book he is dead serious about such ghost’s presence along with his wife being possessed by a demon, and some Buddha monks’ supernatural powers, which makes me wonder how much of the other stuff in the book is similar BS.  I guess if Paultain was alive and read this he would dismiss me as an ignorant, narrow-minded farang and probably insult me for saying the ghost, the demon and the monks are BS.  But that's what I think of all of it: superstitious BS at best ! ... or at worst an egocentric author enjoying manipulating his readers into accepting impossible narratives...

My guesstimate is that Paultain spent at least the first half of the 1990s in Pattaya and at some point he writes about having some troubles with the law which the book is unclear about giving the impression he was a victim of arbitrary police prosecution.  He did time in a Thai jail but even there he shone brighter than his fellow inmates and the Thai policemen allegedly all but begged his forgiveness for the incarceration.  Then he wrote he “was just over 30 years old without a pension scheme” and decided to leave Thailand and go to Holland where he started out in construction (“scaffolding”)  Again: by my calculations if Paultain was born in 1957 he would have turned 30 in 1987, NOT the mid 1990s as I think is implicit in the book’s chronology.  The wife joined him in Holland where their marriage came to a quick, violent end.

In 1999 (this date is explicitly given) Paultain started going back to Thailand every year as a sex tourist and from then until 2009 the book focuses only on his copious sexual adventures while on month-long vacations.  My impression was that with time he got more and more into the ladyboys, but most of his vacation time was measurably spent with the GGs.  His preferred modus operandi was to go for the beer bar GGs who back in the 2000s were way cheaper than the go-go ones and more likely to latch on to customers indefinitely (I remember that from personal experience).   Paultain, according to himself, had a unique knack to pick beautiful, open-minded GGs into heartfelt GFE, anal sex, and 3sums and group sex with other GGs and with ladyboys.  The barfines and LT rates he quoted he was paying were rock bottom ones, but he did spend a lot of money buying them dresses from street vendors and taking them on daytime tours to Ko Larng beaches, tiger and crocodile zoos, floating markets, temples, orphanages and shooting ranges…  Apparently he rang the bell every bar he set foot into, which at multiple bars each night would have been ruinous if it was true and way more costly than the budget he said he set for himself every night (2,000 baht).

The book stops in 2009, which is about when he started posting on the ladyboy Boards and most of us first heard of Paultain and his ladyboy adventures.

There you have it.  This is Paultain’s life as best as I can summarize it from the book, which is mostly about his many sexual encounters over 30 years told in such vivid detail that I wonder how he remembered them all.   Was he taking notes all along?  I certainly don’t remember the Thai names and sex acts I did with all the whores I fucked in Thailand, who must have been a fraction of the number Paultain says in the book he fucked.  Or did he?  In his detailed bedroom accounts, he never once mentioned taking intimate pictures of any of them, which for such a pornographic intrepid monger was to be expected.  Accordingly, the book does not have a single picture to go with all the sex and sightseeing and I wonder why the fuck not…as it would not cost that much more to add a few pages of black and white pics to a book that might sell a lot more if it had such pics...

The book’s narrative is developed in 44 chapters (listed below) that initially correspond to the earlier Middle East-Manila-BKK periods of his life and then turn to specific episodes with Pattaya lovers with copious details of the sex with all of them and also to episodes with other Pattaya farangs "on the piss".  As already mentioned, only as time goes by does he seem to get more into the ladyboys.  What astonished me the most was on p. 260 when he says only in 2008 he went "for the first time ever into a LB only bar [Pook Swan], which (he) never had the nerve to go into alone, thinking LB only bars were too intimidating for (him)."  WTF?  Mr. Tough Guy Shameless who lived in Thailand for at least a decade, had a bar next door to Casanova and another in Pattaya where he went constantly to soi 6 but never noticed (or mentioned) Hi-Boss possibly the best ladyboy bar ever in Thailand took almost 30 years (30!) to set foot alone in a ladyboy bar ? Fuckballs I am sure all of us ladyboy curious punters coming to TH for the first times ventured into the ladyboy bars as soon as we stumbled upon one.   Moreover:  not once, I repeat NOT ONCE does Paultain mention himself sucking ladyboy cock or being topped by a ladyboy which is something all ladyboy lovers eventually do to lesser or greater extents even those who never admit to it.  That, along with the ghosts and the demons, is another reason I am not so sure about the full veracity of the book.

Having said that, in my next (and final) book review post I will reflect how I see myself as a Paultain of sorts when I brag about my own adventures and like Paultain may come across as a bit of a self-entitled prick when I TR my exploits.  But at least I post pics along with my TRs so nobody can doubt my stories...

I know what I just wrote sounds a little harsh, but the book’s facts just don’t add up and along with the self-glorifying narrative that’s why I quickly lost patience and put the book down the first time I started to read it.  So I would encourage BMs who knew and liked Paultain to please step in and post how the guy was not so dodgy as I think the book’s incongruencies make me think he was…

Well I nominated him but I didn't know him. I did like his posts on this and the other forum and he sounded quite a character. I haven't read his book which from what you say does sound somewhat dodgy. I might try to get a copy when I'm in Pattaya.

I had a similar reaction regarding BS.  This guy just had too many unbelievable experiences.  For sure he was a great story teller but I seriously doubt much of what he wrote.  I read all his thread in another board, which I THINK were in the book. I seem to recall he actually posted much of the book there.  In any event, just not believable to me that any man had that many exceptional and fantastic experiences.  One that sticks out a bit was of him playing host to Thai military and becoming their hero.  The ego component is just huge.  I suspect his health was going South bigtime and he knew the end was "near" and wanted something to take his mind off it and lot's of adulation.

And yeah, the "hey, look at me and all the great stuff I'm doing!" does remind me a bit of you Rom, as you said, bragging. But I don't think there is much embellishment or outright BS in your posts.  Overall you're a bird of a different feather.

I agree.  The book's narrative underscores the undrafted plea of a lonely man seeking recognition, approval, even love which he probably never in his life felt he was deserving of.

Paultain also posted here at LBR quite a few of the 2007-onwards chapters of his book under a TR format.  And it made for a damn good TR WITH PICTURES that corroborated his stories.   So I have no doubt that the guy was for real as far as being a proficient sex tourist going once a year to Thailand on month-long vacations where he successfully connected with multiple GGs and sissies... He was also popular enough with other mongers on the ground and with BMs online although he would inevitably turn off those of us with BS intake limits.   Anyhoo, here is the link to his TR-classic right here at LBR.  He had a similar TR at PY and perhaps at the other sissy Boards.  It's certainly worth reading and checking out the pics:

Yes and thanks JSG.  I hope that when I post at ladyboy boards, I don't come across as Paultain does in his book.  Like him, I am prone to showboating, but I would never undermine my own show with juvenile fibs and non-sense like ghosts, demons, and monks with superpowers.  And if I claimed to have joined a Thai crack army unit war games and showed them on the fly how it's done, or if I had guitar-jammed with the Thai rock stars, or if I had hung out with Robin Williams during the TH production of "Good Morning Vietnam", or if I had fucked for free beautiful farang trannies visiting TH, or if I had the admiral of the US Pacific Fleet come to my soi 2 bar to play chess, or even if I ever had had a bar on soi 2  "with 40 girls", etc. etc.  I would try to post a pic or 2 in my book or draft more convincing details than Paultain did.

Whether BMs like my TRs or not, I think they all have to credit me with going to great lengths to document them with photos and verifiable chronologies.  And if in the context of the TRs I write on ladyboys with a pen, it is primarily to INTERACT with BMs and give proof that those ladyboy encounters were taken AFTER BMs interacted with me.  Not from a trip a few years back, or downloaded from the internet from other mongers' pictorials.   In fact I dont't need to hype up my mongering encounters, but on the contrary I often downplay or hide the best ones.  For example during my most recent trip I fucked 2 Pattaya sissies (first in a spontaneous-we-can't-believe-we-are-about-to-do-this 3sum and then 1-on-1s) that I am itching to post about but if I did no one would believe me.  And then if I posted the corroborating pics some BMs might be offended and the 2 sissies even more...

But showing off oneself having a good time is part of TRing and there is not a single OP who does not try to cast himself in the best light possible.  Where I saw myself in the mirror in Paultain's book was "THE EXPERIENCE" factor.  "The Paultain Experience".  "The Rom Experience."  It's about conveying to readers, our peers, that we are so special, so gifted that we enjoy Thailand and the sissies so much more genuinely than the less skilled masses reading us can even begin to fathom.  I know I do it because I actually feel it.  Painting a sissy gold or writing on their skins happens not because I pay them for it but because I happen to foster the playful friendly atmosphere where they don't mind it and in some cases even want me to.  Paultain in his book underscored how special and beloved he was when he took his fucks to the zoo, or the temples, or shopping and then made sure to quote them saying "i have been working in Pattaya "N" years and no farang ever took me anywhere".  In my case I take them to fancy night clubs and shows and road trips that otherwise they would have no access to.  And then when I TR on all that, my underlying message is "Looksee me BMs can you party like this?"  But my biggest showboating is of course how I take and post nude pics, I get heroed, and nothing happens and I keep posting them...  I think I am special in that regards.  At PY I even taunted my heroes and the mods for letting them hero me and nothing happening to them ...

But my point is that we all like to feel we have "OUR OWN UNIQUE TH EXPERIENCE".  I can think of "The-Sith Experience" high-rolling, sport-mindfucking sissies one that I can't match.  Or the equally unaccessible for me "Bumblebee Experience" taking tons of awesome pics without touching the models (out of respect for his chosen sissy).  Or the "Snoopdawg Experience" good-heart monger schlepping sissies around SE Asia for National Geographic.  Or PG's "Vietnam Experience" where I have been twice but dared not mess with prostis lest I end up at the Hanoi Hilton.  Or the "Young Sexpat Experience" which I recently observed with the BKK monger I call The Kingpin and that I can only begin to dream of having been young and single in TH on an expat package.   A BM recently questioned me publicly "if I ever had any ladyboy friends as opposed to fucks" and it makes me think he feels he treasures his own experience (making ladyboy friends on a non-sexual level) as much superior to mine in so many ways.  Good for him!

To sum up:  I am Paultain!  We are all Paultain!  And the more singular our "Experience", the more Paultain we be!

An excellent book review, Rom (...)

Thanks Sylvester… Such “excellent book review” would not be thorough and objective if I did not highlight the book's self-caveating that Paultain makes at the very end.  And I quote from the "Afterword" on p. 386:

post-20396-1290462480.jpg.6826c5213b3ef4b29f471c6686ced00d.jpg

" But sure [this book] is only half the story ... the brighter half.  It's a pity I can't write about the other darker half of the past ... not just yet anyway ... "

Let me try to elaborate on this rather cryptic "darker half" without bringing Mod1 into the thread.

The “ladyboy experience” of anyone (not just Paultain's) who is in TH long enough sooner or later will involve exposure to situations we can't TR or write books about.   Such situations are frequent and include witnessing drug use by the ladyboys; opportunities for encounters with underage partners; exposure to and possible infection with venereal diseases and HIV; learning of AIDS, suicide and murder deaths of ladyboys and farangs we used to know; and coming across unscrupulous/criminal farangs and Thais up to no good in TH or elsewhere.  If you are a business owner or a sexpat on a visa you may need to resort to bribery to make your life easier.

Paultain having arrived in TH in the 1980s and being definitely the rogue type probably partook himself in all these kinds of infractions.  In the book he mentions only the visa runs and the periodic cop bribery for his bar and restaurant to stay in business in Pattaya and he said he went to jail for 2 weeks and subsequently was deported for personally serving one single drink in violation of the no-work  injunction of his visa status.   (Of course Paultain being Paultain while in jail he was blown and fucked an inmate ladyboy through the iron bars, and used his time there to subsequently guarantee permanent TH residence upon his return from deportation in a special arrangement with the same cops who threw in jail and deported him in the first place).

Paultain completely omitted the potentially self-embarrassing and unpalatable topic of VDs and HIV-AIDS and unwanted pregnancies and abortions, and was careful not to once mention drugs or underage partners even when referring to the scene in general.  With hundreds of sex partners over the years, he likely caught his share of VDs as he never once mentions condoms in the book and we all know that insatiable sexpat types like him tend not to wear them all the time if at all.  In addition, the man was an alcoholic and a chain smoker, which in conjunction with his rogue nature and the fact that he hung out a lot with ladyboys and bar girls makes it more likely than not that he did drugs in their company.  And as to the underage partners, it was not a big deal in TH until the 2010s.  Before then, they were routinely employed by the bars and openly offered along with the staff of legal age.  Sunee and Soi 6 used to be notorious for such offerings in plain sight of everyone.  It's no longer the case today, but the internet remains full of pictorials from the early 2000s of ladyboys who were underage at the time and nobody cared.  In the book, Paultain more than once stressed how he picked “farm fresh” arrivals to the beer bars and bragged of having insider priority access to such arrivals, so go figure out the odds.

The reason I am mentioning all this is not to incriminate Paultain, but to reinforce his point that the book leaves much untold.  Unfortunately Paultain is gone and will not be able to tell the "darker side" to the “Paultain Experience.” To every monger’s experience really.  We all know it exists.  And if any of us pretends otherwise it’s because like Paultain we have to.

Sure, it exists. But that "darker side" exists all over the world to one degree or another, not just in Thailand.

Reading your review of Paultain's book, and @Soju's reference to the film Apocalypse Now  got me thinking about the Vietnam War, and wondering whether his book, this forum, and this thread would even exist if that war had never happened. I think not. But that is a topic probably best not discussed in great detail here.

I knew Paultain fairly well as it happens. I worked overseas in the Middle East since 2007 and started my own mongering around 2009. As with many lads in the various forums, I met and enjoyed many a wild time of it during those (mad) years, Paultain being one of them, amongst many others.

We did have a good yard about the old days - The Troubles and his exploits in Thailand. When I was in his company, I didn't find he elaborated his ''stories''.  The longer I knew him, it was just a case of picking up where we left off the previous trip. You can often tell when the BS is blatant and I couldn't honestly say he told a story for the sake of getting some kind of reaction. We would message when our travel dates were and if they linked up, then we would arrange to meet up from time to time. However, the more plastered he got, the more incoherent he would become and yes, ramblings would then be the order of the evening. At that point, ending the night or simply me moving off alone was sometimes the better option.

We had things in common and some not but I did enjoy his company, his tales and the stories. Yes indeed, the man could tell a tall tale. Maybe that's just what it was - A Tall Tale. In the end, we lost touch due to my rotations being out of sync with his and then I found out of his passing. So yeah, I think we all in some way or other being a version of Paultain in different degrees.

Thanks SLBT.  Your post may be just the nudge I needed to get Paultain into the Hall of Legends, where as everybody can see I have hesitated to induct him.  I credit him with being the only ladyboy monger to have written a book on the subject, but on the other hand I can't tell how much of the book is fact or fiction.

This will be my last post reviewing Paultain's book and will focus on an episode in the book that could not possibly have happened when Paultain said it did, and even if it happened later it could not have happened like he said it did.  The other relevant aspect of this imagined episode is that it would have involved the infamous Apeman--a legend in his own right, but a controversial one that has no place in the Romscars Hall of Legends as explained in a thread I started 2 years ago:  http://www.ladyboyreview.com/index.php?/topic/9078-cowboy-aka-apeman-naughty-nigel-legends-but-not-quite-as-in-romscars-hall-of-legends/ .

Here is what Paultain said happened on pages 150-152 of his book:

cowboy.jpg.7a4ac9038dea166cca668f7f3e146401.jpg.22a6ee362be05e1e776ed319cfffe75c.jpgIn the course of his 1999 trip he was sitting in a bar on soi 8 and the Apeman supposedly showed up and sat at his table and asked Paultain to get up and sit at another table because he needed that table to interview ladyboys.  Paultain being the tough guy that he was told the Apeman to "Fuck off! " and laid into him "Listen mate I know who you are ... You're that fool that thinks he's a porn star ... on that amateur porn web site Ladyboyguide."  Despite being insulted as a fool and an amateur, the Apeman allegedly asked for Paultain's further views on how to improve his media content.  Paultain ever the constructive voice stepped up the insults over the next 2 pages of the book and the whole episode ended with the Apeman's "head down in shame" and all the ladyboys around "laughing their heads off in agreement" with Paultain.

Except this episode could not possibly have happened!   If anyone checks (I did) the online domain registry for ladyboyguide.com it was originally registered in 2002.   That's 3 years later than Paultain's 1999 vacation.   Moreover, I don't believe the Apeman would tell Paultain to get up and move to another table.  It's just not something anyone would do unless they are a mafia don.  I also don't believe that if the Apeman was called a fool off the bat by Paultain he would passively just sit there and ask for more feedback...

This non-episode documents Paultain's propensity to make up BS in his book and to show off he is a tougher, better monger than the competition, in this case better than the Apeman a heavyweight monger who pioneered ladyboy porn.   This non-episode  is also significant to me because like with the Apeman, I am not impressed with the global persona projected by Paultain.  That's why I waited all these years before bringing up his name for consideration for the Romscars Hall of Legends.

And that's also why I started this thread:  Because I am going to induct Paultain this year but I wanted it to be on record that I did not fall for his BS in the book.  He gets inducted on the merit of having written a book at all (no other ladyboy monger has!) and because every year I like to induct one of the departed mongers and Paultain is the most frequently remembered one.  Towards the end of his life, he also was a strong contributor to our Board and we have here many of the pictures that the book lacked.  We also have Paultain TRing on a couple of subsequent trips to those covered in the book.

Do other BMs agree that Paultain's literary merit and entertaining tall tales outweigh the BS ?

If I got it well, Paultain wrote a book to tell the story of his life. His account is truly nebulous when it comes to his early life and early years in his professional career. For some reason, he then visited the Philippines as a sex tourist. You mentionned no detail probably because he had written nothing about that time, but sex tourists had a bad reputation at that time. Then he became rich handling bars in Thailand but had to leave after a time in prison. Here again, his account is nebulous.
After creating a successful business in Holland, he came back to Pattaya as a GG sex tourist then switched litle by little to ladyboys.

Should I add that I never met Paultain and never had interactions with him in any forum in which I had posted. I hardly remember a few posts he wrote, the most important being a post whose title looked like "why do we write trip reports ?". After reading your thread, I also remember posts about a fistful of crazy farangs rding a boat with ladyboys on a Thai river. I haven't read the thread whose link you gave but try to read it.

Having said that, you feel suspicious about many points written by Paultain in his book. He probably didn't want to explain about his life as a teen ager nor tell what he did in Saudi Arabia. Perhaps SLBT will explain us it's possible to make a bunch of money with an honest job in Saudi Arabia, paultain having told nothing seems suspicious on this point.
I think the period he wanted to civer was his time in the Philippines. I won't explain what I think of (since I don't want to bring Mod1 into the thread too).

I have always found suspicious people who make a lot of money rapidly then write a couple of decades later that they lost everything. I don't know what Paultain studied but I find it strange that he "bounced" several times. Perhaps his businesses in Thailand were doomed to fail since he didn't respect rules and didn't let Thai people get the majority in his business capital or worse, he would engage in illegal business that made him save enough money to reinvest in the Netherlands (and why not why not launder ill-gotten money). No one knows, and I can't charge unless I know. I prefer to keep some distance with the story.

However, I want to defend him on some points that you find suspect.
I'm not going to tell my life in this post but I had lived less than 2 years in the USA in the late 1990's. Although I had graduated at a fairly high level, it had been "the great experience of my life" made of failures and bounces in business. I probably became a legend among my former friends but was considered as mythoman among low level people with whom I worked after I came back to Europe. I had started mongering at 17 years old but became a regular monger around 2000. I had also been seen as a mythoman in mongers forums. (I won't explain why in this post).
If I had to write a book about my teen age, my studies and first professional experiences, I would probable refuse to give details since I find this period of my life uninteresting.
Regarding transexuals, I am unable to remember the year I f...d my first one but remember the exact spot. You might be surprised but I never bottomed, and sucked a shemale only once using a condom. I hadn't paid her a visit for that and refused to suck her cock more than 30 seconds and told her that was her job, then we argued and fought. Therefore, I believe that Paultain's saying nothing on the subject of bottoming or sucking ladyboys' cock  is likely to have the explanation that he never did it. This is probably neither an omission nor a lie. I also believe he didn't take pictures since smartphones were not really developped at that time and he didn't want writing his memoirs in a pornographic style. His stories seem to insist that he had been able to seduce and create relationships (friendly or love relationships) with GGs and ladyboys (prostitutes).

I'm afraid he wrote his book since he needed money (what happened to his business in the Netherlands ?) then starting rambling in Pattaya bars and forums to try to promote the book. I agree that details are dodgy, but your estimation are also inaccurate. You estimated his D-O-B so, if you can't be sure, you can't assume that he lied on dates.

Here are a couple of pros and cons of his induction.
Pros : his post about TRs in another forum. That was just a page, but I remember it was great. I believed that Paultain was close to the forum's team at that time.
His crazy TR of mates inviting ladyboys for a boat ride on a Thai river. (I believed that most advanced ladyboys mongers were able to do it. I see it now as something crazy).
Cons : his book is likely to be total BS. Actually we don't know. Did he want to justify his life and write again the whole story in order to better hide the dark side ? I believe it's possible. I don't want to speculate, I would be ridiculous. The simplest guess would be that he needed to rewrite the story of a meaningless life but also felt like rubbing shameful activities.
His bars were GGs bars. WTF did he do for the ladyboys mongers community ? I don't want to be harsh with him, but let's just let him rest in peace.
Last but not least : does dying too young help to become a legend ?

PS : I will post later to comment details or reply to comments without links to paultain. As always your thread initiated opportunities to have debates on oter subjects.

I feel now tired. I get the impression I'm like  a Catholic Cardinal serving on the Congregation for the Causes of Saints gathered to canonize a sex tourist for the Causes of ladyboys mongers. Why come back to the pre-covid time ? Why not find new ideas for the post covid times ?

Thanks for posting a detailed feedback PG.  It's precisely the kind of feedback I hope to get from more BMs to better decide if Paultain should be in the Romscars Hall of Legends or not.   Let me make a few things clear in reaction to some of your views:

There is no evidence in the book or otherwise that Paultain pursued partners who were too young.  I only brought that topic up in the context of what Paultain called the "DARKER SIDE" he knew about but could not write about in his book.   Paultain the sex tourist picked his P4P partners in the beer bars and later in the ladyboy bars.   Even if the bars in the past had younger than legal age staff there is no evidence that Paultain went after those.

In the book Paultain mentions being in the Philippines in the 1980s only and it was a combination of R&R with running errands for some expats with businesses there and in the Middle East.   I found it odd that he never returned there but if he did, he did not mention it in the book.  He seemed to be a strictly-Pattaya punter.  No mention at all in the book of mongering in BKK or Phuket during his annual escapades.

Paultain did NOT write the book because "he needed money" as he would not have had any expectation of making any.  The potential audience for such farang-in-Thailand books is very small and I doubt Paultain's book sold as many as 50 copies to readers he did not personally ask to buy the book.  The book was self-published on blurb.com and he chose the no-photos, cheapest paper and layout options available and probably did not print more than the number of copies he could personally carry to the Canterbury Tales bookstore and sell his farang friends in Pattaya.   With Blurb you can always have another batch printed later at not much of an extra cost per copy.  The "Paultain Experience" was strictly VANITY PRESS ON-THE-CHEAP but it represents a noteworthy undertaking.

Paultain paints himself in the book as a top business manager but he does not even attempt to convey he became rich from any of his businesses, which eventually all closed.  When he went back to Europe it's because he was concerned with building up a pension for his old age.  He held blue-collar jobs in construction in Holland and lived in a public social housing apartment.   The man was borderline poor scraping together whatever he could to go to TH every year and a couple of years he did not manage to.  This is not my speculation.  It's in the book.

The problem with that book is that we know it contains some lies, exaggerations and ommissions along with what we know to be broadly truthful from 1999 onwards.  But prior to that, how much of it is true?   Did anyone actually meet Paultain when he said he owned a bar in soi 2 or the restaurant in soi 13/2?  Did anyone go to his bar in Nana Plaza?   As far as I am concerned, there is a chance it is all a lie and Paultain was never more than just another colorful sex tourist... Please some one say it wasn't so...

Finally and on a personal note '@PG, I have no idea if Paultain sucked ladyboy dick or not and if he let himself be topped.  He did not write in the book that he did or that he did not.  Like many of us (that includes ME) we hesitate to admit that we take more sexual pleasure from the company of sissies than GGs and Paultain made sure to convey in the book he was primarily after the GGs but was an open minded lustful punter into anal sex who knew ladyboys were too good to pass up.   I remember my first time with a ladyboy when the best I could do for him was hold his cock through a cloth towel and jerk away, but with time such inhibitions dissipated precisely because the cock on a beautiful female figure becomes the biggest focus of the sexual attraction most of us feel for the ladyboys.  PG, if you haven't yet sucked ladyboy cock I don't understand what you are doing with ladyboys.  It's like you are driving Ferraris, but not wanting to exceed 60 mph...  Try it.  It's like first drinking beer when we were teens.  The first 4 or 5 times it felt weird and then we get used to it and love a fresh one down the throat....

The proceeds from the book were to go to two Pattaya orphanages.

Thanks [Quietguy for locating the book on Kindle], but Rom’s review was so thorough and scholarly I no longer feel the need to read it.

Thanks Sylvester for considering my review authoritative enough for you.  It’s not a book I would myself recommend others to read and, as mentioned, I put it down after the first 2 or 3 chapters when I first got it.  I only read the whole enchilada now as a matter of Romscars due diligence.   But you and other BMs may still want to read it yourselves and learn the Paultain nuggets of wisdom and brilliant outcomes I did not have the opportunity to mention.   Here are some noteworthy ones I took note of, but there are many many more in the book:

Paultain brags in the book that he never paid taxes on his soi 2 bar and on his soi 13/2 restaurant while all the other nearby business owners had to pay.  When the tax inspectors would come by to assess and collect, he just charmed them with his irresistible Irish lad ways.

Once Paultain bribed a police chief by gifting him a shillelagh (a rough knobby walking stick from Ireland).  It must have been the luck of the Irish that he happened to have one at hand when the need for the bribe arose.  I must remember to start carrying one when I go back.

Once Paultain actually demanded and obtained a 30K baht envelope FROM a police chief because the Prime Minister of Thailand had sent 2 of his attaches to Pattaya just to check that Paultain was a happy camper.  The whole story is too farfetched but this is the gist of it.

Once in Phuket, Paultain was driving off road in a jeep that all of a sudden was being hit by deadly projectiles being thrown from the foliage by what he thought were hostile jungle Thais.  He turned back and sped away for his life back to the safety of Patong beach only to be told that it was tree monkeys throwing mango pits and small branches at the car… then he wanted to go back with a rifle and kill the monkeys but was dissuaded.

Paultain used his annual vacations in Pattaya to fly small airplanes with instructors to achieve whatever hours were needed to obtain a commercial pilot license and he parachuted a few times per trip.  He also went to the shooting range at the Tiffany’s Cabaret (yes there is a shooting range there) to practice with all kinds of firepower, including hand grenades.   Right there on those 3 things he must have spent more than on the rest of the trip, including airfare, hotel and P4P.

Paultain was a master chef who would routinely just take over restaurant kitchens and street food carts to cook his own meals and delight everyone with his exquisite culinary skills.

Paultain fucked the lesbianism out of a couple of PH boyish lesbians and he was so profilactic that they became bisexual, possibly hetero.

Paultain’s cock would “get hard when the wind blows” (p. 153) and when he first tried Kamagra at 50 years of age there was not the slightest improvement so he realized he "did not need it" and never bothered with it again.

Paultain would collect huge turds of elephant shit from the middle of Beach road and place them under or on his mates bar seats “to take the piss”.  Apparently those mates would smell the turds but would not detect them until they sat on them at which point Paultain would buy everyone a round.

I mentioned that Paultain was dead serious that the apartment where he lived above his restaurant was haunted by the ghost of a young Thai boy up to all kinds of mischief.  To keep him friendly, Paultain made him a shrine with plastic toys offerings.

The moment Paultain’s marriage to the Thai lady may have gone off track was when they moved to Holland and in the course of an altercation she stabbed him multiple times, including in that leg artery that tends to be fatal.  Paultain survived and did not press charges giving his marriage some more time but then she found a Dutch guy.

While in Pattaya, Paultain shaved his head twice a day and used veet cream to prevent hair growing from his ears “like a tree”.  I think he mentioned a ladyboy and a GG merrily shaving the hair on his back in exchange for him shaving their pubes…

As I read the book, I would google fact-check the most incredulous bits and at some point I googled “Tiffany shooting range” and came across a promotional pic with a skinhead that at first I thought was the Paultain himself.  But upon closer inspection I think not.  That dude lacks Paultain’s demi-God aura.

I don’t know, Rom; based up the above anecdotes, it’s sounding more and more like this book is more fiction than fact, which is a far cry from ‘poetic license.’ It seems as if he projects an image of himself as a sort of Indians Jones of SE Asia mongering, always able to extract himself from a variety of precarious situations.

In my mind, the true bad-asses of the oldest profession in the world here in SE Asia are the guys who fly under the radar. They don’t write trip reports on mongering/porn marketing forums; they look like the average guy walking down the street, but who own a diverse portfolio of houses of pleasure in multiple cities; they produce and sell large quantities of pornography, or they operate like ninjas, never disclosing their tactics and existence. These guys make considerable amounts of money, and/or get to bed the hottest escorts in the game, and they do so virtually anonymously. That’s truly impressive and badass. I know a few of these guys in real life. They do exist.

The more I think about it, the fact that Paultain wrote a semi-factual book about SE Asia mongering does not merit him any kind of recognition at all, except perhaps that he had a big ego or some other psychological need to mythologize himself with a book about his apparently semi-fictional exploits and experiences buying and selling sexual services over a few decades. It seems to me that he is merely one of the many charismatic and self-aggrandizing characters who come and go in the SE Asia mongering scene, who wrote a badly written and exaggerated accounting of his life as a whore-monger and pimp.
