Around 04:30 am on Friday, December 10th 2021, the Royal Thai Police entered an illegal bar disguised as a private house in Pattaya, arresting 2 foreigners and 16 Thai men and women. Then, a few minutes after the BiB had left and the confiscated IDs were returned, the store reopened as if nothing had happened, and the owner muttered "shit police" many times... https://all-pattaya.com/thainewsbox/2021/12/10/12 Translated from Japanese

Thought I'd share my recent experiences with police traffic stops in Chiang Mai. I have been stopped three times on my rented scooter in the last 8 days on the moat road surrounding the old city of Chiang Mai. The police were professional and courteous during two of the stops. All three stops also occurred at strategically placed check points on the moat road, where 6 to 8 officers were waving every driver (Thai and non-Thai) on a scooter or motorcycle over to check licenses. I had to pay a 200 bt fine the first time I was stopped because I did not have my id. I told the police officer I forgot my id, apologized politely, and asked if I could "pay a fine". He agreed and politely explained the legal requirement to carry a driver's license when operating a scooter. He directed me to a table to pay the 200 bt fine. I was given a receipt, with the issuing officer's name on it. The second time I was pulled over, I had photocopies of my passport and international driver permit with me, issued in the US. This particular officer came across as disappointed when I produced my license, like he lost out on a few baht. He did not accept the photocopy at first, saying I needed the actual license. Fortunately, Brother Lung, who lives in Chiang Mai, advised me that I should carry only a photocopy of my driver license/permit because of the danger of having a wayward cop hold it hostage. Brother Lung also advised me to invoke the word "embassy" to respond to police who question a photocopy--"US embassy tell me to carry only photocopy." It worked like a charm, too. The officer somewhat grudgingly handed me back my papers and sent me on my way without a fine. The officer who stopped me the third time was very professional and courteous, but he did say something about the photocopy of my license. I again responded with, "US embassy tell me to carry only photocopy." He handed me back my papers, bowed politely, and sent me on my way. EDIT: Neglected to mention that I was wearing a helmet when stopped. I have read that Thai police will ding you for not wearing a helmet while riding a scooter. Don't know how true this is because every other person I see riding a scooter around Chiang Mai does not wear a helmet.

i myself as an expat ladyboy working here in bangkok both decently and also as escorting.....i am very much alarmed by this police constantly setting up and victimizing sex workers posting ads in craigslist or working in the streets in nana i know a lot of friends of mine who are non thai who works here without the proper papers just as tourist or student visa...specially now is low season theyre very much everywhere victimizing you and planted any sort of offense on you either youre just walking in the streets at night even just going on your way home waiting for the bus to come....they check your id and once you dont speak your language thats were they start to have ideas and set you up over something..... upon website calls either incall or outcall often times they use farangs as baits acting as client they most likely operate in craigslist.....according to my friends experience suddenly one falang just call her and visit her in her hotel while other friend of mine told her to meet in a certain place....what happen is gangs of people just tell her your under arrest blah blah blah and you come with us.......one time one friend of mine told me if she tell the hotel reception they will surely arrest her and send her to jail....yes the typical scene is they go to the police station in a close door office and the bidding starts.....they scare you of deporting you or put you in prison but then suddenly they ask something from you instead of sanctioning you.......check your bags and wallets and suddenly once they see money in your wallet of bag they will grab all of them..........and your case is clear you can no go back and work again in the streets they wear in civilian clothes specially in nana both thai or any foreigners who work in the street get victimize by police and sent to lumpini police station and ask 1 thousand per head they come in 3 or more van and goes around from nana to asoke and pick anyone they see in the street yes 1thousand per head so if they fill up the van for sure its gonna be a lot one thing that really bugg me so much is i am still thankful not being victimize by this kind of maffia but then in this low season police and maffia are everywhere and they become aggressive even here in khao san they victimize falang over smoking joints and charge them for it not to mention in my visa run to cambodia we pass to several check points around the road on the way back in bangkok and check our bags passport and everything which wasnt like this during high season i dont know if the thai national police is changing their laws and systems or probably in this low season theyre very much hungry for money
